Connecting children with Art

Created by Katy Jayne

Our Story

As a local artist, educator, and parent, I'm dedicated to sharing my passion for creativity and learning. Join me on a journey to explore art and education in a fun and interactive way.

Life / Goals

Born in Nelson, New Zealand, I grew up in various cities around New Zealand and returned to settle here, with my husband after the lockdowns in 2021. We are a homeschooling/ Playcentre family and believe in child led learning and learning through play. My goal as a parent/educator is to nurture and encourage a passion for life long learning and a thirst for knowledge in many areas whilst prioritising connection and community.

Education/Work

I completed my Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy Major) and Post graduate Certificate of Arts with Massey University then moved on to complete my Diploma of Creativity with The Learning Connexion.

I have worked in ECE, Primary and High School environments and am very passionate about education and encouraging learning always.

Art/Passion

I typically work with ink and watercolor but also dabble in digital art. Fueled by a
busy mind and an eager imagination, I create works that encourages curiosity
and wonder by mixing objects and environments.

My works have been exhibited in many collaborative exhibitions from Oamaru to
New Plymouth as well as the Taranaki and Tasman Art awards. I
participated in the No Shame No Silence exhibition which presented stories of
domestic violence/family court stories as well as a petition to parliament. I
believe that the best education we can give comes from inspiration and
creativity, a desire to seek knowledge and try new things.

Art Class
Leaf Pattern Design

Do I need to know anything about art?

No, these units contain a small infographic to give you a glimpse into the artists and the works they are most famous for. There are also some links/books suggestions included - use this as your starting point for your research, you can use google or a trip to the library to complete the tasks.

I'm no good at art, can I do this?

Yes, the tasks suggested in these units are not an assessment of how good an artist you are but a trial of different styles used by others, you may find something that feels good to you - Remember that comparison is the thief of joy, your art should not look like theirs it belongs just to you.

What age are these units designed for?

So far we have tested these on children age 5-17 but I can’t see any reason for age to be a barrier to completing these tasks - for younger artists simply showing an example and providing materials may be enough, older artists may want to try a little closer to replication.
